Furniture Sharehouse's Fall Drives "Help Make a House a Home"

October 14, 2009, Larchmont, NY -- Furniture Sharehouse, Westchester’s Furniture Bank, held its first of two Fall Furniture Drives on Saturday, September 26 at Glen Island Park in New Rochelle.  Over 200 items of gently-used furniture were collected from over 50 donors for redistribution free of charge directly to needy Westchester families.

A second Fall Furniture Drive will be held in at the North Castle Town Hall in Armonk on Saturday, October 24th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00.  Basic furniture items, including mattresses/box springs, tables and chairs, dressers, occasional tables, rugs and lamps are needed.

The Furniture Drives are official Recycling Events sponsored by the County of Westchester’s Department of Environmental Facilities to encourage recycling of used furniture to keep it out of the waste stream.

The New Rochelle Drive was staffed by volunteers from all over the County, including members of The Junior League of Westchester on the Sound, Pace University’s Lambda Sigma Sophomore Honor Society and other community members.

A large trailer donated by Brookfield Resource Management Inc. of Elmsford was used to collect the furniture for transport to Furniture Sharehouse’s warehouse located at the Westchester County Airport.

“Furniture drives are a great way for us to collect a large quantity of furniture while saving on expensive trucking pick-up costs,” said Kate Bialo, Director of Furniture Sharehouse.  “We were able to fill the trailer with enough good-quality furniture to help 15-20 families turn their empty apartments into a real home.”

Furniture Sharehouse provides gently-used free furniture to families moving out of homeless shelters, escaping domestic violence, or recovering from natural or personal disasters.  Families are referred by member agencies to ensure that the furniture goes directly to those who need it most.  Since opening in April 2007, it has provided 640 families, over 1,700 individuals, including 750 children, with over 6,200 items of furniture worth over $438,000 that they could never have afforded to purchase.

Before loading up the car, donors are urged to check Furniture Sharehouse’s Donation guidelines at www.furnituresharehouse.org to make sure their items can be accepted.  Drop-off donations are also accepted at the warehouse at the Westchester County Airport on Wednesday and Thursday mornings or by arrangement.

October 24th is also “Make a Difference Day” across the country, so if you are looking for a way to make a difference in your community, volunteers are needed to greet donors, unload, sort, tag and re-load furniture – two shifts are available:  8:30 to 11:30 and 11:30 to 3:00.
