DONATIONS

Donate Furniture:

PICK-UP FEES

Effective September 1, 2007, we are asking our furniture donors to make a minimum $20.00 donation at the time of your furniture pick-up to help defray the very high cost of trucking services.  While we realize that the Salvation Army and others do not charge for pick-up, remember that they are selling your furniture (at prices that needy families cannot afford); Furniture Sharehouse makes sure your furniture goes directly to qualified needy families FREE OF CHARGE.  We are a small-budget, all-volunteer organization and we want to continue to be able to help the many families who need our furniture, so we hope you understand.

FURNITURE DONATION GUIDELINES

Our clients have been through tough times and we want them to feel proud of their new furnishings.  Please keep this goal in mind when considering your donations.  Because neither Furniture Sharehouse nor our clients have the resources to re-upholster, re-finish, repair or clean donated items, we ask that you consider your donation carefully - is it something you would be proud to personally deliver to a needy family?

Basic Donation Guidelines:

Your furniture should be in good repair.

  • Upholstered items should be free of any rips, stains, or excessive fading

  • Wooden items should not have excessive watermarks/discoloration, chipped edges, missing hardware/parts etc.

  • Items should be clean, and should not smell of must or mold from storage

Basic furniture items are welcomed.

  • Sofas (no sleeper sofas and no sofas over 80" long)

  • Armchairs

  • Tables & Chairs

  • Dressers

  • Occasional Tables

  • Bookshelves

  • Desks

  • Lamps

  • Small Electric Appliances (in working order)

  • Mirrors

  • Clean Area Rugs

  • Artwork

Some items we can not accept at this time.

  • Sleeper Sofas

  • King-sized Bedding

  • Platform Beds larger than Twin Size

  • Entertainment Units/Armoires over 5’tall

  • Items that are oversized or excessively heavy
  • Large Appliances

  • Outdoor Furniture

  • Pianos

  • Waterbeds

  • Box Springs (without mattress)

  • Exercise Equipment

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR A PICK-UP

Due to the high cost of picking up furniture donations, we require a minimum donation of at least two pieces of furniture, one of which must be a dresser or a sofa, the two items our clients need the most. If you have the minimum items required to schedule a pick-up, we can take any other items you may have to donate.

SCHEDULING YOUR PICK-UP

We pick-up once a week, usually on Thursdays. Pick-ups to Northern Westchester are usually once a month, depending on our mover's availability.

Upon receipt of your Furniture Donation Form, we will contact you to schedule a pick-up date.  Due to the high demand for our pick-up services (and limited funding available for truck services), we usually schedule our pick-up appointments two to three weeks in advance.

Our trucking company has the authority to refuse any donation item that does not meet our specifications.  We know that this will be an inconvenience to you, so we ask you please consider our donation guidelines closely to ensure that your donated items meet our needs.  Refusing a donation on-site is also a hardship for Furniture Sharehouse because once a truck is scheduled, we are responsible for the trucking fee -- whether or not a donation is made -- and we have missed an opportunity to schedule someone else waiting for a pick-up.

Of course, we welcome any donor who can bring donated items (or arrange your own delivery) directly to our warehouse located at the Westchester County Airport -- please call ahead (914-834-1294) to make sure we are available to accept your delivery.

If your furniture meets our above guidelines and you would like to schedule a pickup, please click HERE  to complete our online Furniture Donation Contact Form.  Please complete the form and email it to donate@furnituresharehouse.org.  Photos of your furniture are also welcome.  Once received, we will contact you to schedule a pickup time.

We are a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and your donations to Furniture Sharehouse are deductible to the extent permitted by law. We will provide you with a Donation Receipt for tax purposes that will list the items donated. It is the privilege and responsibility of the donor to fill in the "donation value". For suggested used furniture values, search the internet for "donation value guide" or similar search criteria.

Your $20 pick-up fee may be in the form of cash or check payable to "Furniture Sharehouse" and given to our driver at the time of pick-up.  Of course, we would welcome any additional contributions to help us fulfill our mission of getting basic furniture to the families who need it the most.

Donate Trucking/Moving Services

If you have access to a truck/moving crew, please consider donating moving services to Furniture Sharehouse.  A donation of a half or one full day of moving services on a periodic or even one-time basis can save us hundreds of dollars.

Furniture Sharehouse is also seeking donations of moving supplies and equipment – straps, dollies, moving blankets, etc.

  Donate Money

The great furniture we give to our clients is donated, and all the great work it takes to keep us running is all volunteer, but it still takes money to pay our warehouse rent, to hire trucks and moving crews to pick up the furniture, as well as the other expenses associated with our operations.

If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to help us accomplish our mission, please mail you check (payable to Furniture Sharehouse) to Furniture Sharehouse, 1 West Avenue, Larchmont, NY  10538.  Every donation makes a difference - thank you

Donate Your Time - Volunteer Opportunities
Furniture Sharehouse is an all-volunteer operation.

Are you looking for a gratifying personal volunteer experience?  How about  becoming a “shopping assistant” at our warehouse, helping clients and their case managers “shop” for the furniture they need from their wish lists?  We need client assistants every Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 at our warehouse at the Westchester County Airport.  New volunteers will be given an orientation before working with clients.

Additional volunteer opportunities include helping in the warehouse with organizing and cleaning the furniture, picking up furniture donations in your neighborhood, assisting with office/clerical work, serving on the Board of Directors, soliciting furniture/accessory donations from vendors in your community, helping with fund-raising events and more.

If you would like to become a “shopping assistant” or to volunteer in any way, please e-mail us at info@furnituresharehouse.org or call 914.834.1294 and we will contact you directly.

If you are already a registered volunteer and wish to sign up for a warehouse shift, click here for the Volunteer Calendar.

Our volunteers come from many groups – houses of worship, community civic organizations, school service clubs, corporate volunteer corps – won’t you join us in helping needy families make a house a home?
